The company, based in Spain, operates as a provider of Internet access and web content. It was founded in 1999 by Juan Villalonga, and has its registered office in Pozuelo de Alarcon. The company operates both as a web portal and an Internet access provider in the United States, Spain, and in 16 Latin American countries. It has evolved into a major Internet player through the acquisition of a number of local startups in main Latin American markets: Olé in Spain, Zaz in Brazil, Infosel in Mexico, and Gauchonet y Donde in Argentina. The company has created several vertical portals, such as Invertia, a finance portal; and Educaterra (e-learning). It also has had stakes in other Internet ventures: Uno-e (online banking), Rumbo (travel), Atrea (real estate), Azeler (car dealership), and Maptel (online maps).
